Our Molding & Casting Services
Mold making and resin casting is not for the faint at heart. It is time consuming and labor intensive and sometimes the end result is a failure no matter how hard you try! Over the years, we've made over 1,000 molds of all sorts of objects. And every one is unique. Randy has faced some of the most challenging sculptures to mold and cast!"
All our resin casts are cleaned and seams are sanded and any inconsistencies are remedied before they are sent out. Sometimes we use epoxy to fill any divots or holes. We use heavy gauge wire in supporting legs, tail, and even flying tendrils of the mane. The wires are bent and laid into the mold before it's poured. Each horse truly is, made by hand, one at a time. This process is indeed, a labor of love.
Over the years, we've made more than 1,000 molds of all sorts of objects. And every one is unique. You must calculate where the mold lines need to be to have the best outcome. You also need to determine where air might get trapped and place vents to insure the resin will fill all the cavities in the mold. Randy has faced some of the most challenging sculptures there are to mold and cast!
We use the best quality resin and silicone that's available. The silicone production mold usually produces 50 casts but we often get more than that from the mold. A word on the mold...the mold remains the property of Resins by Randy and it is used only at the request of the artist. The mold is cut up and disposed of at either the request of the artist, OR when we determine that the mold can no longer produce casts up to our standards. We do not sell molds. We do not sell "seconds", or sub-par resin casts. We expect the mold to be paid for in full before we begin building it. Once it is finished, the artist can order as many resin casts as they like, and we will ship directly to their customers. Even overseas.
Prices for molds and casts can vary depending on the actual size and complexity of the sculpture. Larger sculptures are put on the roto casting machine, where they can be rotated so the resin spins through the mold, only coating the sides. This creates a lighter "hollow cast". Smaller pieces are "Solid cast". All supporting legs and tails have steel rods hand-bent and placed inside the mold before adding the resin. Even flying manes and tails have individual wires placed inside for added support. Once removed from the mold, the cast is sanded and cleaned before shipping. Remember, it's just the two of us creating these horses, all by hand. We have alot of orders so sometimes there's a bit of a wait. Please be patient. You WILL get anything you order from Resins by Randy!
